In this edition of The Specialist View, Dani Leman, our Online Manager, explores how AI search, zero-click journeys and changing consumer behaviour are reshaping affiliate marketing, and why Entrepreneurial Brands have an opportunity to stay ahead by looking beyond the last click. In a snapshot: 💡 Understand why AI is changing the way affiliate success should be measured. 🚀 Discover what Entrepreneurial Brands can do now to ensure affiliate continues to drive growth. Is AI casting a new light on Affiliates? Two phrases are currently dominating conversations across the affiliate industry: AI search and zero click journeys. While a lot of the focus is on Google and how this changes search engines, affiliate marketing is also feeling the effects. The affiliate ecosystem has always been built around a simple journey: Search > Research > Click > Purchase Platforms such as Google's AI Overviews, ChatGPT, and Microsoft Copilot increasingly provide answers directly, reducing the need for consumers to research on websites. For publishers who depend on traffic and affiliate revenue, it's raising an uncomfortable question: What happens if the click never arrives? A consumer searching for the best running shoe for marathon training may previously have visited several review sites before making a decision. Increasingly, that research can happen without ever leaving the search or LLM platforms, but those review sites can still have a strong influence on the results. Traditional attribution models may be struggling to capture the full value of affiliate activity. Affiliate marketing has traditionally operated as a performance channel, where publishers are rewarded when they drive a measurable click or sale. But AI driven discovery is making attribution less straightforward. A publisher may influence an AI generated recommendation, which later leads to a branded search, a direct visit or a purchase through another channel altogether. Traditional attribution models may never recognise that influence. This doesn't mean affiliate is becoming less valuable. It means we're not measuring its full contribution. Affiliate's value extends beyond the final click. One of the biggest questions facing the affiliate industry is how partners are rewarded in an AI driven world. If a content partner influences an AI generated recommendation, but a customer later converts via another channel, traditional CPA models may not fully recognise that contribution. As a result, we may see greater adoption of: -Fixed fee content partnerships -Tenancy placements -Hybrid payment models -Measurement frameworks that recognise influence alongside conversion The strongest affiliate publishers have always supported more than sales, including: -Discovery -Consideration -Trust -Product education -Purchase intent LLM’s don't create recommendations from thin air. They rely on content, reviews, expertise and brand signals from across the web. Trusted publishers remain influential, even when a measurable click doesn't occur. As AI reshapes consumer discovery, brands may need to rethink how they value affiliate's contribution. Our Specialist View? AI search isn't affiliate marketing, it's challenging the idea that affiliate should be viewed solely as a last click performance channel. Quality content from trusted publishers and partnerships is increasing in value, as LLMs draw their responses not just from what a brand says about themselves on their own website, but also from what others say about them. As AI reshapes how consumers discover brands and products online, we believe the most successful brands will be those that recognise affiliate's role across the entire customer journey, not just at the point of conversion. The biggest winners are likely to be brands that: -Build strong relationships with trusted publishers -Look beyond last click attribution -Consider hybrid models that reward influence as well as sales -Monitor how their brands appear within AI powered search environments The affiliate industry has adapted to changing consumer behaviour before, from cashback and voucher sites through to content commerce and influencer partnerships. AI feels less like the end of the model and more like its next evolution. |
